Leicester is in the East Midlands which now accounts for over 2,500 registered installations according to Ofgem data. This includes a large number of free solar panels installed in Leicestershire but the data also includes other renewable technologies that can be registered under the feed-in tariff scheme. According to our own data the Leicester area is showing quite a bit of interest in both paid and free solar photovoltaic systems which anyone in the Leicestershire area can apply for free solar panels.
Leicester is on the southern most tip of what I refer to as the free solar hotspot where there is the greatest concentration of free solar installation companies are based. It is the home of Reflex Energy but there are also companies such as Birmingham's My Energy Station, Derby based Heatscape and Nottingham based E.on also nearby whom also have their Eon free solar panels offer albeit with a £99 admin fee. There are a number of other free providers further north and a couple of nationwide installers.
Under the new solar grants scheme every installation in the UK has to be registered in order to claim the feed-in tariff payments. Ofgem collect this data and the figures for 2010 for both free and paid solar installations in the Leicestershire area are detailed below and grouped by the LE postcode. If you find that your postcode area is missing it is because there have been no domestic solar PV installations in that area during 2010.
During that year there were a total of 234 residential domestic solar photovoltaic installations totalling just over 545 kilowatt peak of power output. The average sized installation was 2.33kWp which is slightly smaller than the national average. The most popular sized system was 2.2kWp with the smallest installation being 0.5kWp and the largest being 10kWp. Some people do install small systems to power their sheds, garden rooms or greenhouses. It is important to note that installation below 4kWp attract the highest rate under the FIT's scheme.
The Ofgem data does not distinguish between the Leicester free solar panels and the paid for systems. As with most towns and cities across the UK there are usually no solar installations in the city or town centre area. The most popular areas for solar include the LE12 (East Leake, West Leake, Sutton Bonington, Mountsorrel, Shepshed, Belton, Quorn, Sileby, Wymeswold) postcode areas with a total of 57.68kWp total for 21 separate systems. Also the LE15 (Empingham, Manton, Thistleton, Uppingham, Whissendine, Langham) which had a total of 52.05kWp installed capacity over 22 systems.
